The cold overnight temperatures continue, and this morning the water in our courtyard bird bath was frozen. We broke off the top layer of ice so the birds could get to the water below. House Finches and Yellow-rumped Warblers quickly came in for a drink. The lower pools of our waterfall are deeper than the birdbath, so they did not freeze. Mourning Doves seem to prefer the slightly deeper water.
Cold temperatures increase the calorie demand that birds require, just for simply keeping warm. So we have been keeping the bird feeders in our yard full.
The sliced oranges are enjoyed by Verdin, Yellow-rumps, Orange-crowned Warblers, and even a couple of White-crowned Sparrows. We cut them in half crosswise then spear them either onto ocotillo spines, or place them in a suet cage.
Bewick's Wren and House Finch come to the hanging suet feeders. We have a number of drilled suet logs throughout our yard, and the birds are comfortable perching vertically as they pull the mealworms and raisins from our homemade suet mix.
Our recycled Bottle Bird Feeder attracts Mourning Dove, House Finch, White-crowned Sparrow and House Sparrow. This feeder was the prototype for the wood feeders we have been selling online for a number of years now. The Feeder has been added to, shortened, adjusted, remodeled and generally redesigned a couple of times while we were working to get the design right. It's still working great, with the cute Caguama beer bottle which has a sea turtle on the label.
